How much horsepower did the 426 race Hemi have?
The 426 street Hemi was rated at 425 horsepower from the factory.
In a bid to keep insurance costs down, Chrysler claimed that its 426 Hemi produced 425 horsepower, but it actually delivered a lot more. Its maximum torque was 490 lbs. -ft.! And it was equipped in cars that had virtually no brakes, bias-ply tires and an archaic suspension system.
The 426 Hemi was better than a 440 six pack because it had more horsepower and faster 1/4 mile and 0–60 times. The 426 Hemi had 425 horsepower at 5,000 rpm while the 440 six pack had 390 horsepower at 4,700 rpm.
The 1964 season was an over the top success for the 426 Hemi, with cars featuring the engine taking the first four spots at the Daytona 500 (with the win going to Richard Petty).
Also 1964: “Big Daddy” Don Garlits breaks the 200-mph barrier with a Gen II 426 Race HEMI-powered car, covering the quarter-mile in 7.78 seconds at 201.34 mph.
Thanks to its Supercharged 6.2L High-Output HEMI® V8 engine, the SRT® Super Stock has the highest horsepower of any production car and is the most powerful muscle car( Disclosure3).
Fastest Classic Muscle Car: 1964 Pontiac GTO
Designed by John DeLorean, Russell Gee, and Bill Collins, it could go from zero to 60 mph in little more than 6.6 seconds. Its light body and massive engine made this possible, resulting in impressive top racing speeds.
Chrysler's Biggest Hemi: 10 Feet Long, 16 Cylinders, and 2220 Cubic Inches! A key step in the development of the famous Chrysler Hemi V8 was this monster: a 2500-horsepower aircraft engine designed for the U.S. armed forces in World War II.
The second generation (Gen II) 426 was based on this design, but unlike the street-based Gen I HEMI, it was originally built specifically for racing. The slightly detuned street 426 HEMI offered 425 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 490 ft. -lbs. of torque at 4,000 rpm.
These engines are hard to buy as engine crates, which makes pricing them significantly difficult. However, Mecum has sold two 426 Hemi display engines for $148,500 and $209,000, their rarity significantly bumping up their value.
How much horsepower did a 440 Six Pack produce?
The factory rated the 440 Six Pack at 390 horsepower and 490 lb-ft.
In short, the 392 BGE block is the strongest engine block currently offered in a domestic production vehicle and can comfortably contain the pressure for up to 1,600 hp.

Performance wise, the Hemi Challenger, with its 490 pound-feet of torque, would have taken roughly six seconds to sprint from 0-60 MPH, running through the quarter mile (on stock tires) in around 14 seconds at a trap speed in the 104 MPH range, at least according to the in-period review from Road Test cited in our July ...
1. Ford 427 “Cammer” Ford wanted something to beat the Hemi on race circuits, so they added heads derived from their “Indy” race engine to the 427 “high riser.” The resulting SOHC big block produced as much as 657 horsepower and 575 lb-ft.
One of the rarest muscle cars ever made is without a doubt the 1970-71 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda Convertible, and one has just been dragged out of a dusty storage unit for the first time since 1976. This triple black Hemi-powered 'Cuda convertible is one of only 14 produced for 1970.
The Yenko Camaro 427 SYC was perhaps the fastest muscle car of 1969, which is an impressive feat, to say the least. According to Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine, the vehicle traveled at 108.2 miles per hour to clock a 12.59-second pass in the quarter-mile.
3300-HP Dodge Viper Sets 6.68-Second Quarter-Mile World Record.
The car was literally built around that extraordinary V12 HEMI, and the mechanics of the car are as remarkable as the rest. Case in point: a custom-built Turbo 400 transmission and a hand-fabricated fuel-injection system with 12 Weber carbs turned into throttle bodies for easy starting and idling.

The 2022 Dodge Charger SRT® Hellcat Jailbreak is the fastest Charger model to ever come off the Dodge assembly line. Why? Because it has the same calibration as the Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock with the 6.2-liter HEMI® V8 engine producing 807 HP.
Nicknamed the “Elephant” because of its size, the 426 HEMI was so dominant in its debut, NASCAR changed its rules for engines and began requiring all engines to be available in production vehicles.
The Hemi first debuted in 1951 and the most renowned of all, the 426 Hemi, was built from 1964 through 1971. Accounts of how many were produced vary, but DiamlerChrysler says 6,671 were built.
The word "hemi" is a shortening of the word "hemispherical," and as it relates to engines, means a type of engine that has a hemispherically shaped combustion chamber. It's the same thing that is meant in geography when referencing the Earth, which is split into two hemispheres, north and south.
The first civilian-spec 426 Hemi engines showed up in 1966 with the Dodge Coronet and Charger, and the Plymouth Belvedere.
When did they stop making the 426 Hemi?
The 426 Hemi, in "street Hemi" form, was produced for consumer automobiles from 1965 through 1971. Hemi-powered Dodge and Plymouth cars produced in the model years of 1965 through 1971 have become collector's items.

Though the factory rated the HiPo 440 at 375 hp, this rating, like many of the day, was generally regarded as optimistic. Searching the factory info in some of the old racing bulletins, we find that even Chrysler considered the 375 horsepower rating as excessive.
The R/T model was the performance leader of the Dodge Charger lineup in 1971, along with the Super Bee. The base engine was the mighty 440-ci V8, sporting a single 4-barrel carb delivering 375 hp.
Although the most powerful factory stock 440 engines produced a rated 390 gross horsepower, the OEM blocks can take power in the 600hp range, and survive practically indefinitely at the 500-550hp level.

The 807-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock is the world's quickest and most powerful muscle car: 0-60 miles per hour (mph) acceleration of 3.25 seconds.
It's hard to beat the slick, timeless design of the Ford Mustang. The 1969 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet is considered to be a competitor to the Ford Mustang due to its high level of power with its 428-cid V8 engine. The engine features larger valve heads, a functional hood scoop, and a ram-air induction.
The Pontiac Trans Am was one of the fastest muscle cars of the '70s being beaten out by a small handful of cars on the U.S. market and running really close with cars like the 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo, a true sports car of the times, the Chevelle 454, and the Corvette LS6.

He was able to lay down a quickest time of 9.278 seconds, with a trap speed of 150 mph. That's half a second quicker than a stock Demon, but still a few tenths off Hennessey's own 1000-hosepower Challenger. Seeing as how this is Berge's first run with the car, we bet there's plenty of time to be found.
The biggest new feature for the 2022 Charger was recently announced by Dodge: we're getting a 1,000 horsepower Dodge Charger SRT Ghoul in 2022. What was the highest horsepower NASCAR?
However, modern technology has allowed power outputs near 900 horsepower (670 kW) in unrestricted form while retaining the conventional basic engine design. In fact, before NASCAR instituted the gear rule, Cup engines were capable of operating more than 10,000 rpm, and producing near 1,000 horsepower (750 kW).
Bill Elliott's 212-mph performance during qualifying for the Winston 500 at Talladega in 1987 has stood the test of time. In the world of NASCAR, where speed rules all, being fast is a crucial fundamental of the sport. Drivers live for it, and fans crave it.
The HEMI engine was a mechanical marvel that was so successful it was banned from NASCAR after its first year. Today, it continues to be the basis of the engine that is used by ALL teams in the NHRA Nitro Top Fuel and Funny Car classes.
On this day 50 years ago, Buddy Baker got to go really fast. On Tuesday, March 24, 1970, Baker strapped into a blue Dodge Daytona during a tire test at Talladega Superspeedway, the largest oval track in NASCAR.
